A flying visit

westpac27webwestpac65web

What a start to Week 2 - a visit from the Westpac Helicopter Team who have been based in Mercury Bay for the summer. Mr Morgan had the inspiration to bring the crew to school first thing Tuesday morning and give us all a chance to show just how much we appreciate what they have been doing for our community. Students from all ages laid on the ground and spelt out THANKS! and then many got the chance to hear from the crew members themselves.

Special mention must also go to the group of touring motorcylists who turned up on their gleaming machines to add weight to the 'exclamation mark'. One of their group had received treatment from the Westpac crew during their stay in the Bay and they wanted to contribute to the occasion.

Comments from the students:

Mufti day and Emmanuel Kija

emmanuelwebEvery year we organize a mufti day to raise funds for our World vision child, Emmanuel Kija. But as we leave our
uniforms at home on Friday, we want to raise more than money this year—we want to raise awareness of just who Emmanuel
is and how he lives his life and why we continue to support him.

Emmanuel is 8 years old and he lives in Nkoma, a small community in northern Tanzania, East Africa.

He has 2 sisters and 3 brothers and his family are farmers. It is Emmanuel’s responsibility to help care for the animals.
Although he is learning English at school, Emmanuel speaks mainly Kisukuma and Kiswahili. He likes playing football and his
favourite day last year was his birthday!

...and the money we raise helps!
Our fundraising supports both Emmanuel and the wider Nkoma Community. Villages often lack some of the
basic things we take for granted such as health care, good education and clean drinking water and the money we send each year helps the whole community
to decide how to develop.

In the community each farmer has about 2 hectares of land but with low rainfall and often not enough money to buy
fertilizer, the community has had to develop techniques to get the best

In 2013, when the World Vision project ends in Nkoma the student leaders will consult with other students and identify a new project to support.

Project Jonah - save a whale this summer

whale3Want to be trained up to be able to help with whale and dolphin strandings?

Each year hundreds of whales and dolphins strand on our shores. While some are sick or injured, others are healthy and just need a helping hand back out to sea. Come and learn how you can be part of our community response team by signing up for the Project Jonah course on Saturday 3rd December 9-5pm. You can become a Project Jonah Marine Mammal Medic with this one day course - it could be your first step into the world of marine biology or add to your already impressive knowledge of the seas. See Mr Scott if you have any questions and then book online at www.projectjonah.org.nz
