The Mercury Bay Cup 2011

imagescaf3vzh5Time to start designing, digging out all those recycled materials and test whether your dream boat sinks, stutters or sails off in style - yes it's the Mercury Bay Cup again.

Our Primary classes from Y1-6 will all be busy working to design and build their boats in Week 10 leading to competiton day in the final week of term. Two classes, Room 24 and 26 are even heading off to the Marina on Tuesday to learn from professional boat builders just what makes a good design. This is clearly getting very serious!

The rules are simple, in teams of 1-4 members they have to design and construct a boat made entirely from 'recycled materials'. This means any materials must have been 'used before for another purpose'. Boats must measure between 30-60cm. Designing and planning can start at home but all final plans and construction will be done at school. No pre-cut materials will be allowed.cup2008 011web

All classes will have a race off and the best 2 from each class will then go on represent their class in the big race in Week 11.

Judges will be marking crews on the creativity of materials used, originality of design and the perseverance of the team in the planning, design and construction phases.

Prizes will be awarded for the most original design, best teamwork, most creative use of materials and, of course, first across the line! Heave ho and let's get going guys!
