Mercury Bay Area School

On Thursday 4th August 8SPD and 8FOR drive to Waihi and went straight to the Waihi Museum where they had a presentation about the history of gold mining in the Waihi area. They completed a worksheet while they had a good look around the intriguing models and displays. The amputated thumbs were popular!  Morning tea was at the pump house where the view of the Martha Mine open pit was spectacular.

On to the Education Centre where they undertook three educational activities on uses for gold and silver, comparing the past with the present and planning for the future. They also went on a guided bus tour of the mine and it’s processing plant.

A huge thank you to the parents who made this trip possible by transporting the students to and from Waihi.
