How to measure an orange

oranges008webWhen was the last time you walked past a maths classroom and smelled oranges? Even more surprising, it wasn't early morning tea but a maths investigation underway.

A Y10 geometics class had been presented with the question " How many ways can you think of to measure an orange?" How many ways can you think of? The class came up with 19 different attributes they could measure.

The class then split into groups and decided on two attributes each to investigate. Half the class were given an organic orange, locally grown and the other half a supermarket orange from Australia. They told me what equipment they needed and worked in pairs on their investigations. Each group then combined their investigations and results to produce a wall display which is outside the staffroom.

The photographs show some of the classroom activity – is this how you imagine a “maths class” to look like?
