Y9 take on the challenges

img_3008w

The new year has begun and our new Y9 students have successfully faced the
challenge of new home rooms, new routines and a day of problem solving activities.

The challenges are designed to get students working together developing their
cooperation and teamwork skills. They included activities that required thinking skills as
well as those which were largely physical.

All link back to the New Zealand Curriculum and the key competencies;
thinking, managing self, relating to others, partcipating and contributing.
Well done Y9 - a great start!

Year 10 Ski Trip Day 2

img_6829web img_6839web img_6847web

Blue skies, no wind and according to the experienced amongst us - brilliant conditions all round. Lessons to master the basics were early enough in the day to allow everyone the chance to explore up into the Rock Gardens in the afternoon. We have returned relatively injury free, full of stories of face plants and fast runs and eager to head further up the slopes in the morning.

Year 10 Snow Trip Day 1

img_6820webNews from the mountain on Day 1 of our trip. Plenty of snow but we can only admire from a distance until Wednesday morning as the wind has been far too strong and the ski fields have been closed all day. Luckily, we have had alternative plans and as you can see from the photos, Adventure World has kept us more than entertained along with a dip in the hot pools and dropping into Huka Falls. Forecasts say that we can head for the slopes tomorrow morning so more pictures should show snow adventures by the end of the night!

Waihi - the search for gold

waihigoldminewebOn Thursday 4th August 8SPD and 8FOR drive to Waihi and went straight to the Waihi Museum where they had a presentation about the history of gold mining in the Waihi area. They completed a worksheet while they had a good look around the intriguing models and displays. The amputated thumbs were popular!  Morning tea was at the pump house where the view of the Martha Mine open pit was spectacular.

On to the Education Centre where they undertook three educational activities on uses for gold and silver, comparing the past with the present and planning for the future. They also went on a guided bus tour of the mine and it’s processing plant.

A huge thank you to the parents who made this trip possible by transporting the students to and from Waihi.
